Using Indoor Outdoor Rugs to Decorate the Outdoors

by James Halpert

Patios and decks should be treated in a similar fashion as the indoor living spaces of your home.  Installing an indoor outdoor rug in your patio or deck is a great way to add decor in the space while also protecting the surface underneath.  Most outdoor rugs are designed to withstand all kinds of weather conditions and typical wear and tear found in outdoor living spaces.  Adding comfort in outdoor areas is also a great way to make the space more inviting for family and guests.  There are many choices of rug sizes, styles, patterns, colors, and materials to choose from.  The outdoor area rug of your choice should be an accent piece that can be used to tie in all of the colors in the space.  For instance, color can be found in furniture, plants, flowers, paint, accent pillows, and other items in the space which can act as a guide when you are about to choose an outdoor  rug to tie in with the rest of the decor.

outrugIndoor outdoor rugs can be purchased in many types of stores including home improvement, department, garden center, or discount store.  When choosing which ones will best fit the size of your deck or patio, consider purchasing one that is quite a bit smaller than the space available so if you choose an interesting pattern it won’t get covered up by furniture and other items.  Outdoor area rugs also come in styles, patterns, colors, and shapes that are unusual and can easily create a focal point in your outdoor space.  The addition of an unusual style, shape, pattern, or color combination is however considered more modern in design and it needs to be combined with other modern pieces.

If you choose to shop for a rug online much like you would for wool area rugs, keep in mind that size does matter so you will definitely have to pay close attention to the item description because many times the rug that is pictured is not necessarily the same size that you are about to purchase.  You should also check the item materials to ensure that it can easily be cleaned because most outdoor spaces get dirty and dusty so you don’t want a rug that is too difficult to clean.  Durability should also be a major deciding factor so look for materials that are designed for outdoor use like 100% wool or synthetic fibers which typically come clean easily and last a long time.
